last night, hannibal buress sang a little bit of seal’s “kiss from a rose” and it was hilarious.

he also opened for the live action (ha) version of the eric andre show that went down at the EARL; he served as interim host as well as andre’s sidekick. at first this seemed weird - hannibal’s going to OPEN a show? but once he hit the stage, it made perfect sense. the crowd was rowdy. they were ready for comedy, but for the comedy of eric andre, which involves destroying the set immediately, throwing chicken and mayo into the crowd, and running through the audience naked (uh, ask SoSure about that last one). all within the first 3 minutes. so these folks were locked and loaded and as soon as hannibal hit the stage, they shot off their mouths. hannibal handled all of that like a pro because he is a pro. he took the obnoxious behavior and spun it into gold and quickly whipped the audience into shape. after he was done, they were ready to listen to the next comic (rob haze, who was wonderful, as was the other comic, gilbert lawand). it was masterful. the perfect plan.

but for real, i kinda wish hannibal had a chance to sing more of that song. it is both beautiful and inherently funny.
