“of course she couldn’t learn it…she’s a girl.”
so i’m a minor member of this secret society of internet music geeks and today (admittedly, with my help) talk turned to the breeders. i can and will talk kim or kelley deal all day, every day. anyhoo, their head to toe EP came up - it’s the one that was produced by j. mascis and has sebadoh & guided by voices covers. as i was looking for the video for the GBV cover (see below), i stumbled upon the above video.
so. amazing.
there’s a lot going on here, especially for me. let’s not even get into MTV news in general and john norris in particular. let’s talk about the lollapalooza coverage. i only went to one lollapalooza, but i think i picked a doozy. it was this one, the ‘94 one. the line up for my show was exactly the one in the video, except instead of boredoms i got green day (the day before they played that infamous mud-slinging woodstock show). on the side stage was stereolab. i didn’t see the smashing pumpkins; i left early to catch a lush show. a power-packed day of music and one of my favorite days ever.
let’s talk about the kelley & kim show. one of my favorite things about the breeders is watching the interplay between the sisters. they speak almost exactly the same, two slightly raspy voices speeding up at odd times, finishing each other’s sentences. i love it. you can get a tiny sense of it here, although i believe they are both tweeked out of their gourds.
let’s talk about josephine wiggs making out with kelley while kim, oblivious, is yapping away. actually, let’s just watch that again and crack up.
let’s wonder if the L7 girls and the deal girls ever hung out together. in a perfect alt-nation you’d like to think so, but knowing what i know about women…probably not. i have noticed that when you’re a woman and you’re used to being pretty much the only chick around, you automatically don’t like/trust any other broad that comes around. you’ll come around after a while, once you get to know somebody & decide if they’re worth knowing - but at first? oy. plus kim & kelley practically spoke their own language. i saw that pixies documentary where they had their own bus away from everyone else. i can’t see them hanging with donita sparks.
(now i could be completely wrong about that - maybe i’m the bitch. but if you know of any documentation of the various group members having a big ol’ love in, please send it this way!)
anyhoo. viva the deal sisters!! here’s that GBV cover song i was talking about. i am knocked out by the hawtness of those two. they turn 50 in june, so expect to see me rehash all of this in a couple of months.
